The CFFL Story Chapter 5: Don’t Tread On Me – The Sons Of Liberty Era

As covered in the previous chapters, the first two years of the CFFL proper (2000-01) was the Schizo era, and the next two years (2002-03) was the Mayhem/Maulers era. But those “eras” were short-lived compared to the one true CFFL dynasty, which began in the 2005 season when Sons Of Liberty claimed their first championship and continued through 2016 when they claimed their sixth.

The stories of the previous eras were best told in narrative form, but the tale of SOL’s dominance of the twelve years from 2005-2016 is best told with cold, hard numbers.

Put simply, this is Carl’s league and he’s just letting us play in it. From 2005-2016 SOL finished in the top two in every major regular season, playoff and consolation bracket measurable. In that twelve year span, SOL appeared in nine final games (7 playoff, 2 consolation) and won eight. That’s some Manchester United level shit right there.

It should be noted that Deep Snappers is right there with SOL in many of the categories. Snappers had their own era in the middle of the SOL dynasty when they won two consecutive titles in 2008-09. But that merely makes them Arsenal to SOL’s Man United, or the 1970s Cowboys to SOL’s 1970s Steelers – a clear #2 to a dominant #1.

One last note – just because the comparisons stopped at 2016 does not mean the SOL dynasty is over. If they make another title run this year it will be their seventh championship in fourteen years, at which point we will rename the league to the Koontz Fantasy Football League and just let Carl keep the trophy permanently.
